Shiga-kougen Ski Resort

A long-standing winter sports kingdom, Yamanouchi Town embraces a ski area that was the first in Japan to introduce a ski lift back in January 1947. Here the ski slopes are laid out on dramatically diversified terrain and come with abundant high-quality powder snow.

During the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, one of the ski areas in Shiga Heights came into sharp focus the world over as the venue for the first ever snowboarding competition in the history of the Winter Olympics. There are 84 varied courses served by a total of 71 lifts including a Kids Park, a Snowboarding Park and skiers-only slopes, thus catering to skiers and snowboarders of all levels from the beginner to the expert. A variety of on-snow recreation opportunities for families can also be enjoyed. For the more nature-oriented, guided snowshoe trekking over snow-covered terrain is highly recommended.

Kita-Shiga Heights, as distinct from Shiga Heights, is also where on-snow sports can be enjoyed to the fullest as it offers four distinctive ski areas where snowboarding is permitted on all slopes.
