Kokuya is a traditional Japanese-style inn located right in the heart of mainland Japan—in a town famous for monkeys bathing in snowy hot springs. Our hotel was established in 1625 and is currently overseen by the 16th generation of owners, making it one of the oldest hotels in Japan. We are passionate about providing the authentic hot spring experience, and all of the baths in our hotel use free-flowing hot spring water. We also own six different spring sources, and our guests can enjoy our nine indoor baths with a total of 16 tubs. Our full-course kaiseki meals are made from local ingredients, and the dishes served changed every month so as to express the essence of the season. Our meals are especially popular with guests from overseas.

  Snow Monkey Park

  About 300 wild monkeys live in this park. Don't worry, they are used to humans! You may find it humorous to see monkeys pleasantly bathing in an open-air bath. Pictures of monkeys like you don’t see every day are on display at the park's main office.

  Zenkoji Temple

  The temple is a famous tourist destination. Its main hall is a designated national treasure. Zenkoji has a history of over 1,400 years. It is said that visiting this temple once in your life grants Gokuraku Ojo—Buddhist paradise.

  Obuse

  Obuse is the town of chestnuts, Hokusai, and flowers.
  The town has many highlights, including a Hokusai museum exhibiting paintings, sketches, and letters that Hokusai produced while in Obuse, and Gansho-in Temple, where Happo Nirami Ho-O Zu—one of Hokusai’s greatest works in his later life—is on display.

To get to Kokuya, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to JR Nagano Station, then transfer to the Nagano Electric Railway Express and get off at Yudanaka Station. A free shuttle bus is available from the station starting at 15:00.
